Illustrator Presentation

Arturo Torres is a Dallas based artist and illustrator.

Torres has no formal education, he began making art at the age of 8 as a way to escape his violent surroundings. He talks about laying under his bed and trying to mimic his favorite comic books (especially Jim Lee's X-Men, 1991).

He met a professional artist in high school, who encouraged him to put his work into a more professional portfolio.

He did not attend college, so he is a self-taught illustrator.

In 2012, he was managing a co-op office space and making gig posters for bands and DJ's in the Dallas area. Writer Shea Serrano found one of his posters, and finally found the specific style he wanted for the illustrations of his upcoming book, "The Rap Yearbook".

Since Shea Serrano's first book, they have gone on to publish three books, all three landing on the New York Times Best Sellers list. Serrano described Torres' style as "textured and kind of ugly", which could be considered an insult, but it was exactly what he wanted to bring his books to life.

He has also designed a series of basketball courts all around the world.
